Wow, I really suggest you make a friend who works in baggage handling or as an air marshal for any airline. I have two friends who work(ed) for two separate airlines - one still does and one retired last year. I have a couple of other friends are currently air marshals. Your opinion that as passengers we are considered to be 'protected' would change dramatically. That may be the 'public' opinion presented to the media, but it certainly is not the common opinion held by airline and federal employees.

In this area we have many ex-military personnel. Many of them are ex-special forces and go to work for civilian contractors (in Afghanistan and Iraq) after they leave the military or retire. Some of them work as air marshalls.
