>Why? The point was to demonstrate that "*E*.*" is not finding files where E is somewhere in the stem regardless of extension. It is finding files where E is somewhere in the name including the extension.

I understood this already. But what I'm saying, that all the mentioned functions return wrong results when I have *e*.jpg as my mask.
If it's not broken, fix it until it is.
