Hard, but not impossible. You can always define a special key combination as a macro which would insert a space, or use some other character temporarily and then have a script which would translate that character into chr(32), or you can always type 032 while holding the Alt key.

Though the spaces typed in such roundabout ways would still display as dots if you keep Show Whitespace on :).
