If you have 100,000 files, you don't need to split it in 2, but in 10 or 100 pieces, to get folders of reasonable size. What kind of information do the files have? Is there a possibility of splitting by filename? E.g., by first letter of filename.

Do you already use NTFS, or do you have an older filesystem? Or an entirely different filesystem, like a Linux server?
