Well if there's anything that you're looking for in these files, you may store the info about it in the table. Any search would then involve the table first, finding the filename in it (by date, keywords, whatever you decide to add to it), and then go straight to the file without going through the whole directory.

The key, of course, is to keep this table up-to-date, which is the job the app in charge of directory watch would do.
