I've never heard anything (other than a derogatory comment I mean) than American used. That's in America, (just couldnt' resist), Canada, Mexico, Panama, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Honduras, Bolivia, Peru, Germany, France, Spain, Switzerland, Netherlands, and a few other countries I'll leave off the list. Of course, I have not travelled outside of the U.S. since 1991, so everything could have changed since then!

I have heard a few South Americans (more than 1 country) resent the fact that Americans are called 'Americans' but they understood that it was the rest of the world as well who referred to citizens of the U.S. that way, not just us. In most of those cases, it was a real issue of being jealous of the wealth and economic prosperity and freedoms here too though (another story altogether).

I would tell everyone who is bothered by it not to worry. It won't be that much longer and you will be calling us all 'Mexicans' because 1 in 7 live here now.

>>The United States of America is the only sovereign nation in the world with the word America in its official name. Actually, the founders of this country started that and I guess they were optimists or simply imperialists and hoped to one day expand over the entire continent? :o) (That statement probably is true!)

>>The preposition of is equivalent to the of in Federative Republic of Brazil, Commonwealth of Australia, or Federal Republic of Germany.

>That's an intersting article, Ms Rhona Research, and more or less complements what I said. However, if hispanics object to America referring only to the USA why did they sing "I love to be in America" in West Side Story? :-)

>>I like this opinion on it:
