Sure it has more than one connotation and more than one meaning, but one of it's main meanings is to recover from illness.
Just about anything can be nit picked to death, but in fact, it does mean that. Actually, now that I think about it, 'recover' does too. Have you ever heard, "How's his fever?" "He's recovering."
