>Can I ask an ignorant American question please? Is there really a heated debate going on between 'Canadians' and 'Quebecers' (ok not sure what a person from Quebec is called)?
Not really, it has died down now, but it is always there.
> Isn't everyone born in Canada Canadian? Or is that the argument?
Everyone born is Canada is a Canadian.
> Do those from Quebec want to be known as Quebecers instead of Canadian and actually separate from Canada?
The votes have been close, but it seems that only a hardcore minority want to truly have their own country. I larger group want more recognition for Quebec as being different from the rest of Canada plus they want more control over their own affairs.
> What about those in Quebec that want to remain a part of Canada? Are they still Canadian?
We had a close call in the 1980 and especially in 1995 when Quebecers voted to stay or not. As this date neared, issues like you mention came up plus:
- what if the native people didn't want to be part of Quebec?
- does Quebec then assume their portion of the national debt?
- can they use the Canadian dollar and for how long?
> This is beginning to sound like the War Between the North and the South...
It did come to violence in the 1970's. There was a terrorist group carried out kiddnappings, bombings and killings.
I think that Canada will eventually split into English and French halves. I don't want to see it happen though.
