I know this will open up some debate, but I'm really not looking for anything very deep on comparisons and how this one handles strings better than that one; just what do you think would be a good direction to go so I can minimize my time between contracts/jobs.

I like php. It looks a lot like fox, or C or java. Picking it up is a snap and there is a ton of sample code out there. It's also free and can talk to any odbc source. Here are some links to get you going:
