Then a marketing wizz must have given that solution.

Maybe they've found a few, but then each one of them would cause enough controversy and be bad for the sales - some groups would threaten their members would cancel subscriptions, others would organize rubberstamped letters campaigns, some competing newspapers would have a field day (and great sales) bashing them... so this was an elegant, although obvious, way out.

And if my memory serves me at all, this isn't the first time they took this sort of exit. Wasn't the PC once a person of the year?
