Especially when very busy and meeting deadlines it is very easy to accidentally wipe out a file or delete the wrong directory or just overwrite a file we didn't wish to. It is a good practice to backup your directory to another directory before making any changes on a regular basis. Even better, back it up to another hard drive or external source. That way you will always have a working copy without your mods as well.
Even better yet, to have source control procedures in place (VSS in another physical server, for example).
