Indeed, it is a shortcut for scientific notation. The Wikipedia talks about "Engineering notation".
In case you are not familiar with scientific notation, you can also have negative exponents, for example:
5 * 10 ^ -6 (shortcut or "engineering" notation: 5e-6), meaning 0.000005.
10^-6 is defined as 1 / 10^6.
Scientific notation (or the shortcut engineering notation) is often used to express very large numbers, or very small numbers (close to zero).
