>>I`ve never seen this movie all the way through in one sitting. I just caught the last half of it. Such a wonderful, slow but satisfying story. Lots to think about and try to understand.

An excellent movie based on an excellent book. IIRC Robert Redford even kept the last line from the book: "I am haunted by waters."

I wouldn't call the younger brother, played by Brad Pitt, bad. Just someone who sails through life heedlessly. In a family of ministers, that's enough to qualify as the black sheep.

Great acting all around. I second your recommendation.

Here's another one. My daughters were here this weekend and we hit the Blockbuster on the way home. Emily grabbed "What's Eating Gilbert Grape?" and asked if we could rent it. Sure, I said, with little enthusiasm. I didn't know anything about it other than that a young Johnny Depp and an even younger Leonardo DiCaprio were in it. Wow, it has been a long time since I was so pleasantly surprised by a movie. Afterwards I told the girls there used to be lots of movies like that -- character-driven, not an F/X in sight.
