>Did you see Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon? The English subtitles on the Chinese version and the English spoken in the dubbed version were completely different in many places.

Actually, I'd consider fake subtitles (or fake dub) a separate form of art. The type where the content wildly differs from what's actually in the script, yet it somehow still makes sense.

One unforgettable, which I didn't even see, but a dozen people were so keen to tell me all about it, was an episode of "Sheriff in New York", re-run on New Year's eve of 1976 or 77. That winter we had an unexplainable shortage of onions - which is incredible, it grows like grass anywhere you drop it, and our cuisine has it in pretty much anything but cakes. So they subtitled this episode as if Dennis Weaver is hunting a 50kg sack of onions, stolen by a gang from a bank's vault or armored vehicle.

Another one was the mock-burial ceremony of New Primitivism in Sarajevo, where they had a sign language translator (actually the singer of the No Smoking Orchestra) who was totally faking it, using a lot of everyday gestures - strangulation, pulling the chain, hanging, cutthroat etc, completely contrary to the mock-solemn tone of the official speech.
