Well, I'ld try to look at the ASCII text in the EXE (a utility like QuickView or a HEX editor can be helpful; Notepad doesn't work very well) and look for a copyright notice for a database library. I've had some luck with that in the past. Also, sometimes you can read other useful information such as a company name or product description.

While it is possible to write your own ISAM library it is hardly worth the trouble. Rolling your own RDBMS is even less likely.
