It's improved over older versions, where the valid dates stopped as soon as you got earlier than the year when Julian calendar was replaced with Gregorian (though I wonder what year was it, because it didn't happen the same year in all countries).
I can see several uses for such dates:
- archaeology, history etc
- trying to calculate when was the loan taken, given the interest rate and the actual amount of interest paid :)
- carbon dating (two molecules of carbon going for a date - maybe we can start a carbon dating service?)
- testing the y0k bug fixes
