I'm a little confused about this. You said that you want to impose it, which makes it sound like it's your decision where to store the path, then you say you realized it's in the registry, which makes it sound like this is some path set by something else. My advice would be to avoid the registry. If you store it in a configuration table and the system runs on a LAN, then if a machine is replaced or reformatted, it does not affect your app. But if it's in the registry, this setting and any others are toast. I never use the registry. I think a lot of people did just because it seemed like you had to do this to have a "real" application, because MS did it, or because it seemed cool. With my apps, there's a configuration table for the system-wide settings and a user properties table that stores user specific settings. The network administrators can reformat/replace machines all day long and it still won't affect my app. Of course, you may not be talking about a LAN-based app, but I don't use the registry in my web apps, either.
