I will certainly pick up the book this week then. Especially since I just finished my last book this weekend (read the book of Eragon Saturday - Monday) and need something to read :o)

>It is not about who is recommending war or when war is required. Rather the documentary and book are both concerned with how the military has become an power unto itself. It is such a huge and profitable business that the raison d'etre has now become money, power and oil, since without oil the machine cannot run.
>
>This is about militarism and imperialism. About how the military-industrial complex affects and exterts an influence over an enormous part of the economy, the political world, and big business. It is what Eisenhower was warning about in his farewell address.

>The book has much more detail than the documentary but both are worth the time to review.

>>Interesting comment Jos. I think you will find that when it comes to war, Generals are usually the last to recommend it or support it. It should always be the absolute last resort. Only used when no other options are available and even then sometimes not used at all unless necessary for national defense. Typically, it is the politicians who have never been to war or spent time in the military who push for it as a means to an end.

>>>Hi Evan
>>>
>>>Since your post on this documentary I have watched out for this DVD in the stores. I saw it tonight and, coincidentally, just after finishing Chalmers Johnson's The Sorrows of Empire (he is interviewed in the movie). Well that is an incredibly sad tale and I think every gung-ho, pro-war, pro-military person needs to see that documentary, read the book, and be brave enough to think about what Eisenhower warned about. Thanks for posting about it.

>>>>I highly recommend this DVD "Why We Fight". http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Why_We_Fight_%282005_film%29

>>>>Eisenhower warns of the "Miliary Industrial Complex" actually "Military Industry Congressional Complex". This is pretty radical for a republican we believed in building roads and funding healthcare, as it served the needs of defence.
