Let's see... his defense team was regularly assassinated (three lawyers dead); none of his witnesses were brought to the stand; his team didn't cross-examine the witnesses; when he himself tried, he was regularly shut up; the judges were Shia (all or predominantly, not quite clear) and went abroad for instructions (!) - how's that for independent judiciary? I presume you'd feel quite comfortable being dealt justice in that manner.

Nobody would bother for such and unworthy cause and risk the wrath of the US for "siding with terrorists" or whatever the quip of the day would be. If you think US scored political points in the world, you may be right. It only remains to be seen whether these were positive or negative points, for this trial will surely leave a trail.
