>>>Yea, I guess I could have been a little clearer... whoring is frowned upon in society, but something as twisted as private prisons is lauded. We've come a long way!
>>>
>>>Coming a long way brings another thing to mind. Politicians no longer place the wreaths themselves at cenotaphs and such, but the President Ford funeral (the only U.S. president I ever saw in person, less than 50 feet away) brought a new one for me - "honourary pall bearers" who, it turns out, bear nothing yet get to be called pall bearers.

>>I was watching that part of the news coverage, when Pres. Ford's casket was taken off the plane in Washington, and wondered about that, too. Then I understood why. They said the casket weighed 900 pounds. You wouldn't want his body tumbling out when a bunch of old geezers can't bear the weight, would you? The real pallbearers were young, burly looking military guys and you could see them straining a little.

>Sure, I realized that too.
>I just don't 'get' "hnorary pall-bearers". Seems a tad overboar to me.

I see your point but honestly don't have a problem with what was done. These were long-serving public officials who worked closely with President Ford and were there to honor his memory. These guys don't need empty accolades. I was fine with it.

"You know why? It was outta respect."
