Well, from everything I've heard about the local incident (and a good friend knows the family), these were good parents. The incident followed a bad report card, to which the parents responded by curtailing extra-curricular activities. Somehow, the kid managed to get his hands on the locked up gun. I can't help but believe that if there'd been no gun in the house, there's a pretty good chance the kid would be alive. (Though he might have tried another method of suicide, those are a lot more susceptible to failure.)
