>>I wore out an LP and then a cassette of Weather Report's "Mysterious Traveler" and still listen to it once in a while on CD. That record was *really* out there. It stood out even in rock's most creative period.

>It's interesting that later works of the members have gone in quite different directions. I thought I'd like Miroslav Vitouš, being Slavic etc, but what I could find of him was exactly what I despise. OTOH, Joe Zawinul is the right kind of crazy. Haven't run into anything by Wayne Shorter or Jaco Pastorius yet, so I wouldn't know.
Except that, going by some of his earlier rantings, Zawinal is a bit of an anti semite. Sure can make music though.
I don't know much about Shorter or Pastorius on a personal level, but again, they sure can make music. There is a guy at work who also plays jazz base professionally around Ontario. He thinks Pastorius plays bass in God's band.
Can't say I've heard much of Miroslav Vitouš outside of Weather Report, and it's hard to know sometimes how a player will be outside of the tight group he/she has played in for a long time. I loved the MJQ, but when I heard Percy Heath with other groups, I have to say I wasn't nearly as impressed as I'd expected to be.
