Not finally figured out yet, but it looks like either motherboard RAM cache (or access to/from it) or CPU cache.
The RAM passes POST but their diagnistics report problems with memory. They put in new (or at least different) memory sticks and the problem persisted. Thus the "conclusion".
But the problem is that the motherboard is no longer orderable, so if it's the motherboard (and I suspect the same for the CPU) it "has to go through the RMA process" and the way they descibe it it is all done my mail (after an initial phone call).
Their big worry is the RAID (C:), figuring that it will have problems if tried as non-RAID or even on a different RAID controller. I have no idea, but it sounds plausible.
I have no idea how long I'm going to be without my WORK MACHINE. And it sucks.
