Why do you think it is a dead end?. I believe .NET opens you the door to a lot of functionality that could be accessible using WINAPI but it is so convoluted.

.NET in the other hand gives you a lot of power in an OOP way, and looking at Microsoft Plans it is the road to the future as shown in the increased use in Windows Vista.

Let me know what is your take in this.
