Hello Jim

RAID1 is the only raid level that you can do this and is the reason we use RAID1 extensively. Other raid formats, even just a striped pair can not be run standalone without a raid controller. This option was not always popular in the past because it doesn't give you the same speed boost as the other RAID formats and wastes more space. But with the price/performance of modern hard drives, this is no longer a big issue.

In other words, you were lucky :)
