The cattle industry when through a few revolutions. One was to feed them oats instead of grass, which fattened them up all year long. The next was to feed them protein. If I'm not mistaken this was this was orginally soybeans. Someone got the bright idea to grind up culled chickens and cattle, since it was going to be thrown out anyhow.
