If you are using ADSL you are uploading to their server via the 64/128 or 256 link,depending on what you have, if there is a lot of data it could take a while.
We have offsite backup for some of our larger clients, but in their case we have 2Meg ISDN connections and it works well.

I have an automated backup program (Backup4All) that runs every night but it backs up to an external hard drive which is within feet of the two computers it backs up. If there is a fire or burglary or whatever, there all of it goes.
