It's car-crash TV for ghouls. Afraid I'm one of the ghouls. Yes the whole point of it is to show these dorks who think they have talent, so we can cringe and mock them. Not an insult to the audience - it's what they want. That's like saying the Roman Games were an insult to the sensitive Roman masses. Just as the Romans wanted blood so do we. If it weren't for our civilised, non-carbaric society, WE'd be telvising gladiatorial games to this day - opiate of the masses and all that.
