Zipping and unzipping would not completely solve the memo bloat problem - data will still have to be re-written to the memo file.

You might consider, as an alternative, having a bunch of files. Your main table would just have the filename.

Any of these options would be too complicated for my taste - I would just do the regular maintenance (pack the tables).
