Nathaniel told me that Yale piloted a program with the kids in one dorm (I think it was his) to get them to reduce energy use. The University promised that whatever was saved, up to I think 15% of the previous year's energy costs, would be donated to charity or invested in green energy sources (can't remember which). The kids came through, turning off lights and computers and stereos and ..., and I think cut consumption by 20%.
