One ever mentioned argument against using Refox to encrypt has been that it first and for all 'offers' people the ability to decrypt and then tells you: Use me to protect against me!

Fair enough. We used to use a product called "Konxise" that is used purely for encryption and compression. but you could'nt register the resulting exe as a COM server for West Wind or whatever. The latest Refox does allow this, which is why we converted. IMHO any app that can unpack and run itself can be hacked. I see this as an extra layer of complexity to dissuade casual hacking.
"... They ne'er cared for us
yet: suffer us to famish, and their store-houses
crammed with grain; make edicts for usury, to
support usurers; repeal daily any wholesome act
established against the rich, and provide more
piercing statutes daily, to chain up and restrain
the poor. If the wars eat us not up, they will; and
there's all the love they bear us.
