He may have been voted in democratically, and that is perfectly understandable. Venezuelans will vote for the candidate who they feel will best serve their country. It depends on what their primary concerns are at that time. He obviously had answers aimed at that. What is scary is his position and relationship with Iran since the election. He has taken a position in direct opposition to BOTH the U.S. and the EU.

>>It's kind of scary that Chavez was democratically elected, isn't it?

>Why is it "scary"?

>Sure, the guy has an axe to grind with the U.S. But many do, and he's one of the few who actually says so.
>
>Are you scared that Venezuela will attack the U.S.? Or maybe scared that the U.S. will attack Venezuela?
>
>Surely there's something to be said about THE PEOPLE electing him in a fair and honest election other than "scary". And, who knows, but it's possible that the current U.S. administration's antics had something to do with why THE PEOPLE voted for him over his opponents.

There isn't nothing (politically, culturally speaking) in common with the place that I live and Argentina (as example).. Seems different planets.. Completelly.. It is a big mistake and a preconception to think that we have common cultures/thoughts..
