My understanding is that for both VMWare and Win4Lin you still need a copy of Windows i.e. your app still runs in Windows, which in turn is hosted on Linux via one of these products.

I'm not an expert at this. I was involved a while back with a client running an FPD app with the data files on Samba (at the time on either NetBSD or OpenBSD IIRC). I recall finding notes in the READMEs that helped get that setup running reliably but I don't know where they are now.
