Jim;

We should just let the market drive our economy, and lives. Why accept a wage when your employer wants to maximize his/her profits? Business needs money so they can bribe politicians and make more money. You should be happy with a bowl of rice. Work from the time you can push a wheel barrow until you die.

Memories of an Irish story/song.

A young man needed work so he went to a Hiring Fair. He met a farmer who promised him work, good food, and a place to sleep. Upon arriving at the farmers home, he found that the farmers children had eaten all the food and there was none for him. Then he was escorted to the attic where he was to sleep – with many other workers in the same position.

After a few weeks of work the young man approached the farmer to complain that his bones were showing through his skin. He was not being fed. The farmer replied, “When you die there are plenty more like you who need work”!

My grandfather (born 1890) worked a 56-hour week. Ten hours weekdays and six hours on Saturday’s. This was the norm. My grandfather told me, “The worst thing that ever happened in this country was the 40 hour week”! I found out why he said that.

It was during the depression years. The 40-hour week was meant to give the potential of work to unemployed people. Along with that you received a paycheck for 40 hours. A 16-hour wage cut is felt by some.

What was the effect of the 40-hour week on employees and employers? Well the employees received less pay, the employers saved money and then the best part of all! You still got to work long hours (over 40) but received no pay for the “overtime”.

Work your employees longer than 40 hours per week and do not hire additional labor. That is only fair, as your employer should be given consideration in such matters. It is his money you are being paid.

Since the 40-hour week was introduced we have had many labor laws come and go. Make everyone an Exempt Employee and you can work them 27/7 without wage compensation.

How dare the little guy even dream he/she should enjoy the profits of a businessman! :)

>>>Too many people are brainwashed and not willing to consider changes to an otherwise "perfect system".
>>
>>Ah yes brainwashing. So I guess we should all go to re-education to remove the capitalist brianwashing. Seems to have worked on Elian Gonzolez. He seems so happy now.
>>
>>The system is not perfect by any means. There is way too much socialist influence for the market to work efficiently in all aspecs of life.

>Jake,
>If you want a solid example of the system working efficiently, without "socialist" constraints of any kind, just read up on the U.S. (concentrating on business and is social implications) up until the late 1930s.
>There you will find the system 'at its best' - child labour galore, 6 day weeks (much 7 too), firing on a whim, low low pay lowered more if the boss felt like it, dangerous working conditions, foul work environments and much more.
>"...too much socialist influence..." now?????
