I've found that if i STRTOFILE the rtf content to a DOC and email it as an attachment, then MSWord plays nice with it when its opened. I never had success sending the RTF content as the msg, and it would most likely be a problem for a good number of client email programs that wont read RTF emails.

I'm getting the control codes imbedded in the msg text whether its sent plain text or html. (Perhaps a limitation of the control.) Are you aware of a method of emailing RTF content?
