I think I've seen this movie.
I think it's mainly about two brothers. The older brother had to become ruthless and vicious soldier to protect his younger brother for the dangers of war. He would take all the most dangerous assignment so his brother won't have to. He became such a great soldier that he went up though the ranks and became a leader of a platoon.

I forget how the movie ends tho. I think the older brother is killed and the movie is the little brother's flash back of what happened in the war.

Private Ryan" and "Thin Red Line" (et al), with bros and friends from the same village who ended up on opposite sides. The brutality of the southern vigilantes against anyone with ANY communist connections, along with summary executions without any trial, was quite startling as I'd never heard of this.
