Yes, it was required to show masses couple miracles to get them in order, but it's not the worst thing that can be found in human history. 'Common sense laws' are very elusive, everyone may and will bend them to own profit (or worse for 'common good' purpose). The plain truth is that either we have moral imperatives (yes, it is religious, because it's based on belief) or we don't have them; and posting 'individual' examples: "you see this guy doesn't go to church and he didn't kill anyone" would be a weak argument. Without moral imperative you are not necessarily a monster (though ironically most people instinctively try this role), it might happen that you will be a victim.Oh but it is. It does not have to be so complicated. Morality does not follow from religion and viceversa.
