>I have created a cursor, and made it visible to the user to set their order as they choose. It is visible to them in a grid, and if they click on the header for Home Runs, it sorts by home runs. If they click it again, it sorts by home runs descending. If they move to pitching statistics and click on Innings Pitched, it sorts by that, although leaving batters sorted by HR. When they are satisfied with the sort order, they print it.

In addition to Ed's response I have a grid class that adds indexes on the fly. The only problem in your case that you somehow want to preserve index on one field and add an index on another as a combination, if I understood you right.

If it's not broken, fix it until it is.
