FWIW, if you can secure "temporary resident" status in Australia, you can avoid tax on any business you held anywhere in the world before you arrived. So a successful US businessman could go and live on the Gold Coast, transfer all profits from the US business to Australia, and pay no income tax whatsoever. The purpose is to draw in successful businesspeople/entrepreneurs who will hopefully do it again in Australia. Those aussies are smart.
"... They ne'er cared for us
yet: suffer us to famish, and their store-houses
crammed with grain; make edicts for usury, to
support usurers; repeal daily any wholesome act
established against the rich, and provide more
piercing statutes daily, to chain up and restrain
the poor. If the wars eat us not up, they will; and
there's all the love they bear us."
-- Shakespeare: Coriolanus, Act 1, scene 1
