The impression I got was that every man, woman, and child in Switzerland would be mobilized and armed if necessary to defend the country...

Actually, our military leaders were willing to retreat the army back into the alps (Gotthard massive) in case the armies at the borders were overrun and yielding parts of the plateau. But in the alps I think we would have done well as there's a lot of fortification. Only what good is an army for if it doesn't defend its people?
