However, the freedom index is different. The United Nation's Human Freedom Index compares the amount of freedom that citizens of different countries enjoy. It considers the right to travel, assemble, and speak; the absence of forced labor, torture and other extreme legal punishment (such as the death penalty); freedom of political opposition, the press and trade unions; an independent judiciary; gender equality; and the legal right to trial, counsel of choice, privacy, religion and sexual practice.

Consider some areas:

freedom to:
worship
work
learn
receive representation (free legal aid)
travel in our own country
travel abroad
peacefully assemble
teach ideas and receive information
monitor human rights violations
use ethnic languages
peaceful opposition
political/legal equality
independent newspapers, books, radio, tv, courts, trade unions
social and economic opportunties and equality
innocent until proven guilty
a prompt trial
right to own property
determine the number of children we will have
interracial, inter-religious or civil marriage
equality of sexes in divorce proceedings and marriages
homosexuality
privacy
received medical care (should it be considered a right and a part of the national welfare?)

freedom from:
arbitrary seizure of property
forced or child labor
compulsory work
disappearances (or killings outside of justice)
torture or coercion
capital punishment (not sure why this is considered a freedom from)
compulsory religion or ideology in school
political censorship of the press
mail and telephone recording or censorship
unwarranted search and seizure

I think the U.S. excels at most, but we are also backsliding quite a bit during this current administration. That must be acknowledged.

>>>Sure, we are "based" on a lot of different thought. But, we have more freedom in our country than others. In Tennessee, there's no law against owning guns.
>>
>>AH! freedom to get blown away by your neighbour over a boundary dispute, freedom for a traffic cop to get shot when the perp winds down his window! Why didn't you say so!?
>>
>>What are the other freedoms that we Europeans don't enjoy?

>I think we have less taxes than you, at least according to George Harrison.
