>>Had an interesting experience yesterday. I had my 8-year-old nephew in the back of my car. He noticed a little "door" on the armrest and opened it up and wondered what it was. I told him it was an ashtray. He didn't know at first what that was.

>>I'm boggled and delighted to think that we may be raising a generation that doesn't know about ashtrays as a matter of course.

>When we bought this Corolla, it was missing the ashtray and the lighter. First I thought of finding replacements, but then gave it up because they're in such a position that it'd be really dangerous to use them while driving - way on the bottom of the column and in front of the shift stick.

>But then I noticed the two can holders. Well, since I'd never drink a Coke, I started keeping two Guinness cans, with tops removed, and I take care to always have some water in them. That's my ashtrays.

>I usually don't smoke when I drive, unless it's a longer distance. Then it's about one each hour or fifty miles, whichever comes first. I take the right lane and slow down a few miles below the limit.

I also drive Corolla and never bothered to learn where is ashtray. It helps to be a non-smoker.
