Well a few years back may not have been USB2, which can make a big difference.
I would expect a USB2 stick to be fast 'enough' compared to a real HD if there are a few open TMP files of some size, simply because there is no rotation or head positioning to wait for and these are the loonnngggg parts of HD I/O. While a USB2 stick does transfer data a lot slower, my expectation is that it should be easily made up for by the the other factors.
