There is a protection in place. Once you notify the credit agencies of something that you dispute, the debtor must properly substantiate their charge within 30 days or the charge must be removed from your credit report.

The kicker is that you must notice that it has happened. You have to pay attention.

Identity theft is another matter entirely. I've heard it can take 600 man-hours to clear up identity theft. It's just bad mojo.

Slum landlords and corrupt public utilities are bad enough to deal with. I can't imagine dealing with identity theft.
