I've just realised the main difference between AI and the british Simon Cowell production: X Factor. In X Factor there are 3 categriesL: under 25, groups, and older people. The ones that get through the initial stages are separated into the 3 categories and each of the judges "sponsors" one - takes them through training, whittles them down, till there's a few from each that go through to the aired knock-out stage.
BTW, I was chuffed that the babe from Joisey got through, just by the skin of her perfect teeth :-)
