Actually I like the U of Iowa just fine. There is a strong resemblance between Iowa and Wisconsin fans. They are numerous, enthusiastic, and in general a whole lot of fun. Nothing wrong with that.


PS -- I played pickup basketball with Steve Alford once. True story. I was still in my 20s and still a pretty decent hoops player (not great) and went over about every day after work to a fancy health club in North Dallas. They had a regulation basketball court and if you wanted to play you just signed up on the whiteboard. The next 5 went in against the winners of the last game. So this one night I wrote my name down and noticed the name above it was Steve A. I looked around and sure enough, it was him. He was standing in the corner doing toe touches, which for some reason is a detail I remember. The game ended and we went out there as challengers. During the brief shootaround between games Steve was draining one shot after another from three point land. Fwoop, fwoop, fwoop, nothing but net. He was like a machine.

We actually lost the game. The level of play there was pretty high, almost all HS and college players, and the team holding court was awesome. Steve might have been able to win it for us but he was out there recreationally. On one play he gave me the most perfect feed I have ever had in my life. I was out in front on a break and he laid it right on my hands for an easy layup. It was beautiful.
