Funny, but I learned it as "Thou shall not kill.".
I do understand that (some) biblical/language scholars have come to the conclusion that the original was mis-interpreted. But I'd say this "mis-interpretation" was necessitated by people wishing to defend the death penalty.
Kinda like the global warming issue, where people may have a certain stake in one side or the other.
