This got me thinking. If life is so much easier for married people (in general, not just NZ), why are then so many opting out? Why is marriage not attractive? It can't be just the cost of divorce.>

Well, at least the society is supposed to make their lives easier, statistically. Marriage is a social contract, and society provides some benefits for it - tax relief, legal rights etc that singles don't enjoy. And there's supposed to be a peer pressure, albeit not so strong as it was 30-40-... years ago, but it's still there.
The question is why doesn't that work.
