It's still being refreshed, because you probably had the controlsource set for the column, but not for the controls in it. In that case, the controls automatically inherit the controlsource from the column, and on every refresh the controls are assigned the value, visible or not.

You could have got around this by setting the column as unbound, and assigning the controlsources to each control. You could even leave the checkbox unbound too, so you wouldn't be getting the error - but then it would be pointless if you weren't showing the checkbox at all.
