How do you disable an individual item in a drop down combo? (make it visible but not available for selection)

Suppose I wanted to step through all the items in the combo and disable those that contain "19" in them.
Something like:

for i = 1 to this.NumberofElements
   if "19" $ this.listItem(i)
         && disable it
   endif
next
